About Us

St. Andrew's Societies have a history of supporting charities in their own communities and providing scholarship assistance to those in need.

We are presently exploring possibilites for these services within our own community. If your group would like to be considered as a beneficiary of our foundation's benevolence, please click here to find a Grant Application (Adobe Acrobat needed).

Who is St. Andrew?

According to legend, an angel told a monk, St. Rule (Regulus), in a dream to move the bones of St. Andrew from Constantinople to "the ends of the earth". He did so, removing a tooth, arm bone, knee cap and some fingers, and headed towards Scotland.

He shipwrecked off the east coast of Scotland, and built a chapel in a Pictish settlement to house the relics. This settlement later became known as St. Andrews. The chapel was replaced by the Cathedral of St. Andrew in 1160, and St. Andrews became the religious capital of Scotland.

Failte! Welcome!

Welcome to the website for the St. Andrew's Society of Mid-Maryland, based out of Frederick, Maryland.

We were established in July of 1999 by a diverse group of people of Scottish descent and people who love all things Scottish. We happily welcome into membership those who want to help perpetuate Scottish traditions and culture.

We promote the growth of clan societies and Scottish organizations, including the Frederick Scottish Pipe Band and the Frederick Scottish Country Dancers. We support and host Scottish events, such as an annual St. Andrew's Dinner in November, a Burn's Night Supper in January, and a Kirkin' o' the Tartan in the spring.

We are officially recognized by the IRS as a Charitable Organization under Code Section 501(a) as an organization described in section 501(c)(3). Donations to the Society of goods or money, free of tangible benefit to the Donor (or reduced by the amount of any tangible benefit to the Donor) are decductible as Contributions for Income Tax purposes. Also qualified under 509(a)(1), our Membership Dues are considered deductible as Charitable Contributions.
