Who is St. Andrew?

According to legend, an angel told a monk, St. Rule (Regulus), in a dream to move the bones of St. Andrew from Constantinople to "the ends of the earth". He did so, removing a tooth, arm bone, knee cap and some fingers, and headed towards Scotland.

He shipwrecked off the east coast of Scotland, and built a chapel in a Pictish settlement to house the relics. This settlement later became known as St. Andrews. The chapel was replaced by the Cathedral of St. Andrew in 1160, and St. Andrews became the religious capital of Scotland.

We had a fabulous turn out for the Bonfire on August 2nd. The head count was at 65+, and many of our new members were able to come out and meet everyone. It seems we deserved some good luck after our mud and rain at the Festival - other than a few drizzles, all the rain went east and west of Sykesville! Thanks to everyone who came out to see Rant & Roar...and even the hardcore members who hung out until 1:00am watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights on the big screen.

Special thanks to Jon Alexander & Lyn Mullings for the use of their home and meadows, and for all the hard work. Thanks to Genny Furley (and volunteers!) for her ability to muster volunteers to set up and clean up. We also can't forget David Pugh and Scott Furley for their help in creating a masterful event!

A side note from the Bonfire - we have many lost and found items. IF you're missing something and would like to get it back email Donna. If you brought non-member friends and family, please pass on the email address. Also, for non-member friends who would like to join, click here to down load a member application.

National Tartan Day (April 6th), Alexandria, VA!

Saturday, April 5th dawned blue and dry - surprising, since it was supposed to rain all day! The Tartan Day festivities in Alexandria, VA. were scheduled for noon-5pm on Market Square. Snuggled in between Clan Donald and Clan MacDougal, we set up the SASMM Tent and broke out the Walkers Shortbread!

The Tartan Day event was a wonderful advertising trip for the St. Andrew's Society and the Frederick Celtic Festival. We handed out over 250 pamphlets for SASMM & the Festival, as well as 200 packs of Walkers Shortbread. And...we got to listen to great music and watch the dancing all day - what could be better?!?!?
